Experiences during your stay

Tanzania has so much to offer! Three world famous attractions are located in the north of the country: Ngorongoro Crater, the huge Serengeti, where the annual animal migration can be seen, and Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. But that is not all: The two beautiful national parks Lake Manyara and Tarangire are easily accessible from the lodge as well as Lake Easy, where the bushmen can be found, or the only active volcano in Tanzania, Ol Doinyo Lengai, which is located directly at the beautiful Lake Natron.

Especially we recommend you to take a look at the society as well. See how the people live here, learn more about their culture and about all the many differences to our western world. Learning more about the life and people in Tanzania adds the final touch to this wonderful trip.

esight Ecolodge & Safari – Ngorongoro Crater

Safari

There is an incredible amount to discover on a trip to the Serengeti or one of the other magnificent national parks. We offer our guests beautiful and individual safaris on request. With our safari vehicle, with space for up to 8 guests, we cruise through the national parks or to other destinations. Also several days game drives, with overnight stay in a lodge in the national park or with camping, or something special like walking safaris, are possible—whatever you like. Here you can get a non-binding offer from us, we are looking forward to your request.

Each destination is special and each national park has its own charm and character.

Which of the varied destinations appeals to you the most?

Tarangire

Tarangire National Park enchants with both flora and fauna. Besides elephant, giraffe and lion, the imposing, mighty baobab trees are especially eye-catching. The Tarangire River, which runs through the park, attracts many large animals, especially in the dry season from July to October, so that in this season the animal density is very high. A trip to Tarangire National Park is very relaxing and there is super-much to discover! The park covers an impressive 2,600 square kilometers and the drive from the lodge to the entrance takes about 1.5 hours.

Lake Manyara National Park

The park is located between Lake Manyara and the Great African Rift Valley. The park is known for lions climbing on acacia trees, which is indeed a magnificent sight. The density of elephants and buffaloes is very high and even the now rare black rhinos live in the park. Particularly noteworthy is the lush and varied tree and plant cover—although this makes animal sightings difficult. In addition, there are a variety of birds (400 different species) such as the hornbill.

Ngorongoro Reserve

Paradise! Ngorongoro is a collapse crater with a diameter of 17 to 21 km. Zebras, elephants, buffalos, gazelles and wildebeests, all enjoy the lush grass and, it seems, live peacefully together. However, the predator density here is very high, the highest in Africa, which suggests a lot of action! A tour to the Ngorongoro Crater is indescribable, you have to perceive and experience the special atmosphere there yourself, it is simply not to be put into words!

Serengeti

Absolutely worth seeing and impressive is the big animal migration, which can be seen mainly in the Serengeti. About 2.5 million animals follow the rain and therefore the food. You see animal from horizon to horizon–as far as the eye can see. And also wild cats and other animals are around, because they also follow their food 😉 The herds of animals circle clockwise around the complete, huge Serengeti within one year. Depending on the season, the animals are accordingly closer or further away from the lodge. We will be happy to advise you which Serengeti tour makes sense depending on the season. We are looking forward to your request!

Lake Eyasi and the Bushmen

To see the Bushmen in action, we leave early in the morning. The Bushmen speak the unusual click language and live quite simply in caves, small leaf houses or inside Baobab trees. They do not farm or raise livestock, so in the morning they go hunting with bows and arrows. Even if you are not particularly interested in traditional things, this excursion is still extremely exciting and varied and a unique experience. The Datoga tribe can also be visited. They live in simple mud houses, grind corn between large stones and are particularly talented in working with different metals.

Lake Natron and Volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai

Lake Natron is located so far north that a small part of the lake is in Kenya. A few kilometers south of the lake is Tanzania’s only still active volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai. Ol Doinyo Lengai (translated: Mountain of God) is a stratovolcano about 2,960 m high. It is the world’s only active volcano with low-melting lava consisting mainly of soda ash (sodium carbonate). This soda is also dissolved to high concentrations in Lake Natron, which is why the lake bears this name and has a high, i.e. alkaline, pH (9.0 to 10.5). Remarkably many birds are resident at the lake, especially up to 2.5 million beautiful lesser flamingos. Fossil footprints of modern man can be seen at the edge of the lake. These tracks are 120,000 years old, indicating human activity from the Paleolithic period. The volcano can be climbed together with a guide, a good fitness is required for this. Furthermore, a nearby beautiful and hidden waterfall is not worth a trip.

Massai Village & Mto wa Mbu

If you travel Tanzania, you should definitely visit a Maasai village. Not only is the tall ethnic group beautiful to look at with their colorful cloths and lavish jewelry, it is also extremely exciting to learn about their culture. For example, that the Maasai are famous as warriors and cattle herders, they maintain a semi-nomadic lifestyle and polygamy is allowed among them. There are many interesting things to learn and the impressive jump dance is not to be missed. Every Thursday there is the colorful Maasai market in Mto wa Mbu. Visiting one of the numerous banana plantations or the small local market in the village is possible every day. Already on the way to Mto wa Mbu you can buy beautiful souvenirs or jewelry with the wonderful blue glittering tanzanite stone in the African Gallery.

Local Dinner

A very authentic and also a delicious event is Local Dinner at a family home. They serve traditional Tanzanian food, such as green bananas in creamy sauce, rice, beans, leafy vegetables (mnafu) or whatever is in season. While you enjoy the typical food, you can talk to the family in English, ask questions about the country, life and culture in Tanzania or listen to exciting and true stories. Surely this evening will remain in good memory, because you have not only heard how some people live here, you have experienced it yourself!

Transfer Kilimanjaro Airport

Some people will wonder why the transfer from or to the airport is listed here. Kilimanjaro International Airport is located between Arusha and Moshi and is about 4.5 hours by car from the lodge. We are happy to offer the transfer service for a fee. And if you are already on the road with a safari car, it is also worthwhile to combine the practical with the beautiful. On the way there is a lot to see and to do. You can visit a snake park, where you can marvel at other reptiles besides these extraordinary animals, there is a Maasai museum on the way, as well as Maasai villages or the village of Mto wa Mbu with its banana plantations. Furthermore, the African Gallery is a great place for a break or to buy nice souvenirs and jewelry. If you have a little more time, you can also make a side trip to Moshi to the so-called Hot Springs with their wonderfully clear, turquoise water. Here, however, depending on the time, an overnight stay would be necessary, for example in Moshi or Arusha.

Did You Know …

… that there are other wild cat species in the Serengeti besides lions, leopards and cheetahs? For example, the dun cat (African wild cat), the caracal or the serval? The serval is a medium-sized, slender predatory cat with long legs and a small head with large ears. It can also be found in the Ngorongoro Crater. We had an unforgettable encounter with a serval.

Glimpses into the Society

In Tanzania, more than 120 different ethnic groups live peacefully together. As many different tribes as there are, so is the culture in this special country. Don’t miss seeing the Maasai dancing or shooting bows with the Bushmen, the Hadzabe tribe. A visit to an elementary school in the vicinity of the lodge is also particularly heartwarming. You will see many beaming faces, although everything is much simpler than here. Also the visit of the Iraqw market or a traditional dinner at a family home are incomparable and truly not everyone who comes to Tanzania has the opportunity to experience this.
